    Papyrus Fragment from the
    Egyptian Book of the Dead

    Papyrus fragment from the Introduction to Chapter 125 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, apparently written for "Guardian of the Treasury Nefer..." identified in another fragment. Found at Sakkarah.
    Written in hieroglyphs in black ink in four columns, with a sliver of a fifth (or first) and half of a sixth, with five vertical lines. Approximately 3.125 x 3 inches; 80 x 77 mm. Matted, framed, and glazed.
    Exhibited at the Tennessee State Museum, TN, Egytian Relics, Replicas & Revivals, February 27, 2011 through September 4, 2011. Translation by P. Podzorski:

    1 I know y[ou]
    2 name(s) of the 42 gods who exist... [with]
    3 you in the broad hall of the Two Truths, those who live ... [on]
    4 the evil guardians/guardians of evil (things) [and] who drink
    5 from their blood...day

    The particular passage gives the speech which the deceased has to recite in the hall of Maati before being admitted to eternity.

    Book of the Dead, Papyrus of Nu version:
    Chapter 125, Introduction.
    1. (The following) shall be said when the overseer of the house of the overseer of the seal, Nu, triumphant, come forth into the Hall
    2. of double Maati so that he may be separated from every sin which he has done and may behold the faces of the gods. The Osiris Nu, triumphant, says:
    3. "Homage to thee, O Great God, thou Lord of double Maati, I have come to thee, O my Lord, and I have brought myself hither that
    4. I may behold thy beauties. I know thee, and I know thy name, and I know the names of the two and forty gods who exist with
    5. thee in this Hall of double Maati, who live as warders of sinners and who feed upon their blood
    6. on the day when the lives of men are taken into account in the presence of the god Un-Nefer.
    The Introduction is followed by the Negative Confession.
