Robert Barclay: Serious Consideration on Absolute Predestination. Extracted from a late Author; Very suitable for these Times. Reprinted and sold by Thomas Fleet (Boston: Heart and Crown, 1743), 24 pages, stitch binding, 5.5" x 8.5". Upper corner has been signed "J. Phillips 1743". In this pamphlet, Robert Barclay, 1648-1690, made a study of, and denounced the controversial doctrine of Absolute Predestination in the Christian faith. Absolute Predestination centers on the belief that "GOD by an Eternal and unchangeable [sic] Decree hath predestinated to Eternal Damnation the far greater Part of Mankind, and that absolutely, without any respect to their Works, but only for the shewing the Glory of his Justice: And that for the bringing this about, he hath appointed these miserable Souls necessarily to walk in their wicked Ways, that so his Justice may lay hold on them: And that he justly condemns these, altho' he hath withheld from them that Grace by which alone they could have laid hold of Salvation, as having decreed, (without any respect to their Works) That they shall not obey, and that the Gospel which he publickly [sic] invites them to accept, shall never prove effectual for their Salvation, but only serve to aggravate their Guilt, and occasion their greater Damnation."

Barclay not only calls this doctrine a "Novelty", but "highly injurious to God" on numerous counts. It is telling that this pamphlet was republished in 1743, as the 1730s and 1740s saw a resurgence in religious revival movements throughout Europe and America. In fact, the first religious journal to be published in America, The Christian History, was released in March 1743 by Thomas Prince.

Condition: Toned throughout with foxing. Edges and pages are worn, with some paper loss, but binding remains intact.
