General John Stark Gouache Painted Portrait. Circa 1830, 7" x 5". This is a beautiful, hand-painted portrait of the famous Revolutionary War General John Stark in his military uniform. The gouache portrait is superbly painted on board or cardstock, and is housed within a lovely oval display shadow box style frame, under glass, with a rich blue velvet mat and gilt edging. The painting is extremely well executed, having original bright bold colors and distinct definition, creating wonderful overall eye appeal. The frame itself measures to 12.5" x 10.5" and is ready for hanging and display. General John Stark was born in Londonberry, New Hampshire, August 28, 1728. He has been called the "Hero of Bunker Hill". His early training with his father in heavy farming and lumberjack operations, his later practice of hunting and trapping, and his capture by the Indians and study of their language and customs, all led to his success as a member of Rogers' Rangers in the French and Indian Wars. This fostered the soldierly quality of leadership that he showed so strongly in the Revolution. He developed an ability to foresee what the enemy would do and to forestall, thus gaining distinction among Revolutionary officers. Stark's life encompassed the whole revolutionary period, and he was instrumental in the cataclysmic events that produced a free and independent nation. The very words, "Live Free or Die" were written by John Stark, and are now the official motto of the state of New Hampshire.
