    More Information:

Dr. Ashbel Smith was an integral participant in the development of Texas. He was Surgeon General of the Army of the Republic of Texas and Charge d'Affairs to England and France under President Sam Houston. He was also a founder of the University of Texas and the first president of its Board of Regents. John Jenkins refers to Dr. Smith as "one of the wisest men of early Texas." Upon his passing, A. G. Clopton, Dr. Smith's friend and colleague, wrote and delivered this eulogy, and, most likely, had it printed in a small number for private distribution.

Albert Gallatin Clopton was a doctor who served for a short time in the Texas Rangers, was a member of the Secession Convention in 1861, and served as a captain in Hood's Texas Brigade. In 1874 he was elected president of the Texas State Medical Association.
