    Description

"The Torpedoing of the Lusitania" Signed by Sir Harold Boulton. This lot features a small 5.5" x 7.7" pamphlet, 16 pages typed front and back, about the Lusitania and it's scuttling. The Lusitania was an ocean liner that was sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915. This sinking played a significant role in the United States entering into World War I. 1,195 people were killed because of this tragedy; the pamphlet featured here commemorates and narrates this event. The author was present during the sinking and signs his memoirs as "Harold Edwin Boulton." First hand accounts like these allow us to understand the true horror and reality of events that are fading quickly from all but a few living memories. A small portion reads, "I was just learning to balance myself when a girl about twenty-one years old floated up to me. She had been so badly injured that I wondered if she was still alive. She was bleeding freely and seemed very weak. I starting asking if I could not help her on to my box, but she cut me short, saying she did not want to be helped up as she knew she was gone. She asked me to take a ring from her finger, keep it, and if I were saved give it to her lawyer, whose name and address she gave me. She wanted me to tell him that she had tried to die like a brave Canadian girl." A horrible image from a man who saw it all with his own eyes, and clung to a box just to survive. A fantastic lot that is sure to become more valuable as the Lusitiania slips further into history!

The document is in good condition, the main issue being that it was torn out of a larger volume or work, and binding string is becoming frayed and weak. The signature is bold and dark, in black. A very unique item! Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
