Description

[Slavery]. Two Pro-Slavery Tracts Published in South Carolina. The first is titled, "The Rights and the Duties of Masters. A Sermon Preached at the Dedication of a Church, Erected in Charleston, S.C. for the Benefit and Instruction of the Coloured Population." By Rev. J.H. Thornwell, D.D. 51pp. 5.5" x 8.75". Charleston, S.C.: Steam Power Press of Walker & Jones. 1850. A handwritten note is affixed at back with a bit of wax that reads: "From your uncle, J.D." Thornwell was a staunch defender of slavery; his sermon defended slave masters' benevolent responsibility to rule with order over their chattel: "So monstrous are the misrepresentations which ignorance, malice and fanaticism are constantly and assiduously propagating in regard to this relation..." With wraps present. Foxing and dampstaining throughout; heavy wear and soiling to wraps. Paper loss to top and bottom wraps. Single vertical fold through center.

Together with imprint titled, "Remarks on Certain Topics Connected with the General Subject of Slavery by S. Henry Dickson, M.D." 35pp. 5.25" x 9". Charleston: Observer Office Press. 1845. With original wraps. Inscribed at top: "Hon. B.F. Dunkin With Author's Respects." The tract contains two articles previously published, but here reprinted, "at the request of several friends." Both articles outline a defense of slavery based on the superiority of the white race. Scattered foxing and wear to corners. Single vertical fold through center.

Two scarce printings, with no records for the latter to be found since 1948.
