[Republic of Texas]. Gorostiza Pamphlet. Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting a Copy and Translation of a Pamphlet, in the Spanish Language, Printed and Circulated by the Late Minister from Mexico before His Departure from the United States &c. (25th Congress, 2d Session, House Ex. Doc. 190). [Washington]: [no stated publisher or printer], 1838. First edition in English. 8vo. 120pp. Engraved map facing page 8, "Sketch of a part of the boundary between Mexico and the United States as far as the Red River." Sewn wrappers. Original wraps missing, else fine condition.

The first half of this edition contains the original Spanish text; the last half, the English translation. Contains the correspondence related to General Edmund Pendleton Gaines' military occupation of northeast Texas from the Sabine River to Nacogdoches, officially to put down Indian attacks, but effectively aiding Stephen F. Austin's efforts to organize a government. The affair led to a breakdown of U.S. and Mexican relations.

References: Howes G6 (noting only the Spanish and French editions). Streeter 1220C.
