Framed by a Convention of Their Delegates, and Submitted to the People, for Their Consideration and Adoption. According to the Resolve of the General Assembly, Passed on the Second Thursday of May, A. D. 1818. Hartford: Printed by E. Babcock, & Son, [1818]. Octavo in fours (8 x 5 inches; 250 x 127 mm.). 24 pages. Contemporary paper wrappers, stitched at fold. Wrappers worn, damp stained, with bug damage at inner margin, edges; bug-eaten chip out of fold toward bottom runs extent of text, accounted for in sewing; spots of dark soiling at upper half of front wrapper; brown speckling at upper inner margin of back. Title-page torn, now fragile, lacking roughly bottom quarter of leaf with imprint; brown staining; coming free from sewing. Further short marginal tears, chipping, corner creases to rest of pages; some toning; scattered foxing; spot soiling; soft horizontal crease running length of pamphlet. Good. The first state constitution of Connecticut. "Not until 1818 did Connecticut decide to adopt a constitution to replace the royal Charter of 1662. The final draft represented a moderately liberal advance over former governmental practices. All Christian sects were put on an equal basis thus ending Congregational dominance of the state government," making Connecticut the final state to separate religion and government--Streeter.
