    Description

[Abraham Lincoln] A fine set of imprints including a rare edition of Lincoln's reply to Stephen Douglas dated June 26, 1857 regarding Bleeding Kansas and the Dred Scott decision: Speech of the Hon. Abram Lincoln, in Reply to Judge Douglas. Delivered in Representatives' Hall, Springfield, Illinois, June 26, 1857. (n.p. [Springfield], 1857) 7pp. 21 x 31 cm, partly uncut. Lincoln's stirring reply to rival Stephen Douglas' June 12, 1857 address on Kansas, Utah and the Dred Scott Decision. A rare untrimmed variant of a scarce imprint listed as #9 in Jay Monaghan's landmark bibliography, Collections of the Illinois State Historical Library...Lincoln Bibliography 1839-1939. This is one of three known institutional copies cited by OCLC (#11635914). Together with a copy of Douglas' speech of the 12 June: Remarks of Hon. Stephen A. Douglass [sic]. Delivered in the State House at Springfield, Illinois, on 12th of June, 1857. (n.p. [Springfield, Ill.], 1857), 8p. 16 x 24 cm. uncut. Also a rare edition of this address, OCLC references no extant institutional copies of this imprint (#8274422), though it was printed in other editions, all of which spell Douglas' name correctly. Provenance: Goodspeed's, 1954. An excellent set of imprints documenting the tumultuous political debates that plunged the nation into disunion in 1861. Both pamphlets bear partial fold separations and some rough margins, but are otherwise very bright and clean and in overall fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
