    6" x 4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.
    Page from the Book of Esther in Latin with a miniature of Vashti in a tower defying King Ahasuerus standing below. He wears a crown and holds a scepter, both highlighted in gold leaf. The text is in two columns with initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students. Gothic script on parchment.
