    Description

Page from an Illuminated Thirteenth Century French Bible
    Paris, France.
    Mid-13th century.
    6"x4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.
Opening of the Second Book of John in Latin with a five-line historiated initial "S" (Senior Electæ dominæ) showing John as a scribe seated at a desk with his quill and knife for erasures. The opening of the Third Book has a similar five-line historiated initial "S" (Senior Gajo carissimo), also with John as scribe. Both initials have long tails down the center margin, and are highlighted in gold leaf. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students. Gothic script on parchment.
