    6"x4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.
Beginning of Paul's First Epistle to Timothy in Latin. Five line historiated initial "P" (Paulus Apostolus) containing Saint Paul holding a sword, symbol of his martyrdom. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century, Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
