    First English Edition of Kotzebue's
    Voyage of Discovery

Otto von Kotzebue. [H.E. Lloyd, translator]. A Voyage of Discovery, into the South Sea and Beering's Straits, for the purpose of Exploring a North-East Passage, undertaken in the Years 1815-1818... Illustrated with Numerous Plate and Maps. In Three Volumes. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821. First English edition. Three octavo volumes. xv, 358, [ii], 433; [ii], 442 pages. Lacking plate list in first volume and all three half-title pages. Nine engraved illustrated plates (8 in color) and seven maps (four of which fold out). "Plan of the Romanzoffs Islands" map usually found in the second volume is bound in the back of the first volume.
Bound in half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gilt rules and gilt title titles on spines. Bindings rubbed, boards lightly darkened and soiled, corners bumped, spines with vertical surface cracks and small chips, joints worn and chipped; front hinge of volume one cracked, bookseller's holograph pencil notes on rear pastedown, pages and plates cockled, foxing, some browning to text pages and plates, occasional soiling, image offset from plates onto facing text and from text onto plates, folding maps with image transfer from themselves; else a very good set of the first English translation of Kotzebue's famous voyage, in which he explored the Northwest Coast of America and searched for a passage to the Arctic Ocean.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
