An Impressive Work on Prehistoric Mammals

Othniel Charles Marsh. Dinocerata. A Monograph of an Extinct Order of Gigantic Mammals. Washington: United States Geological Survey, 1884.

First edition of this impressive work. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front blank: "J. C. Cady / with kind regards of / O. C. Marsh / Dec. 25th. 1885." Quarto. xviii, [238], [112] pages. Complete with fifty-six inserted lithograph plates, seven of which are folding.

Contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards. This copy rebacked with modern rust-colored cloth covering leather portions of the original binding. New endpapers. Spine lettered in gilt. Some wear to original boards, text slightly toned, seams on folded plates have neat cloth reinforcement on rear. The final plate, a large folding plate, has a short tear near a seam. Overall, very good.

    Nissen Zoology 2693.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
