Beautiful Edition of Oscar Wilde's Most Famous Book

Oscar Wilde. The Picture of Dorian Gray. Paris: Charles Carrington, 1908.

Limited to 80 copies on Japanese vellum. Octavo. 361 pages.

Publisher's full Japanese vellum. Titles and decoration stamped in gilt on front and spine. Top edge gilt with remaining edges untrimmed. Binding is mildly rubbed and darkened. Light toning to pages. A near fine copy.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde's only novel, is considered by many to be his greatest work. Controversial at the time of publication and attacked by many as "immoral," Wilde happily dismissed the controversy with his response to the critics: "Leave my book, I beg you, to the immortality that it deserves." In fact, he had anticipated the critical reaction when he wrote in the novel's preface: "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That's all."
