Walter Crane. Original Watercolor on Silk. "A Naughty Little Boy with Bow and Arrow". [London: 1885]. Signed by Walter Crane with his distinctive monogram and dated "85". (Visible area of painting measures 14.5 x 14.5 inches; 365 mm; frame measures 22.5 x 22.5 inches; 570 x 570 mm). Silk painting with silk-covered matts, framed and glazed. Fine, but for minor scratches and chips to frame, with slight loss at the corners. Walter Crane was without question one of the preeminent Victorian illustrators of children' books, and was especially strong in illustrating nursery rhymes. He was an associate, socialist comrade, and eventually close friend to William Morris, and illustrated books for Morris' Kelmscott Press. He counted as his colleagues and friends the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was heavily influenced by, and helped to create and sustain, the arts and crafts movement in England.

This lovely painting by Crane, a Cupid aiming his bow, was entered in the Summer Exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery (London) in 1886 and was listed in the catalog as "A Naughty Little Boy with Bow and Arrow." Henry Blackburn also used the image on the title page of the guide he did for the exhibition Grosvenor Notes 1886. George Bernard Shaw's review of the exhibition commented: "Mr. Walter Crane's Cupid apparently painted on a handkerchief."
