Original Stylized Ink Drawing of Two Grasshoppers attributed to Pablo Picasso. One page, 5" x 6", n.p. [Paris]; [1919]. Pablo Picasso. Original Stylized Ink Drawing of Two Grasshoppers. One page, 5" x 6", n.p. [Paris]; [1919].
Pen and ink drawing, utilizing a special pen with four tips (of the type used to draw musical staves, for composing or arranging music), making a four-line image of two sauterelles (grasshoppers). On light-colored paper (now toned to light brown). Matted, framed and glazed.
    [Together with:]
Valentine Hugo. Autograph Note Signed. "Valentine Hugo." One page, 5.25" x 6", n.p.; [1960]. On brown paper, mounted to rear of this framed Picasso item. Hugo certifies that Picasso made and gave her this drawing at the Palais Royal where she lived in 1919, and that he made the drawings with a special pen for music with only four out of 5 dents [teeth]. (Added by Valentine Hugo at the top of the note: The pen now only has 3 out of 5 teeth in 1960). (It is possible that the pen Picasso used to make this drawing is one of those in the next Lot, 45072).
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.
Valentine Hugo (1887-1968), born Valentine Marie Augustine Gross, was a French artist and writer. She is best known for her work with the Russian ballet and with the French Surrealists. Hugo hosted salons with many artists, writers, and musicians in Paris, including avant-garde leaders such as Pablo Picasso. She would often sketch her visitors, foreshadowing her portraiture work of the Surrealist leaders later on. Hugo completed another sketch of Picasso in 1934, a work she began in 1932. (Another of Hugo's informal ink portrait sketchs of Picasso can be found in the present auction, Lot 45039).
Condition: The framed Picasso drawing is in very good to near fine; the Valentine Hugo note has some edge wear, creasing, and a few small holes; otherwise good.
