An Original Ink Drawing by Arthur Rackham, Inscribed by Him to Alice Pape, Wife of Artist Eric Pape, Framed with the Original Quill Pen
[Eric Pape]. Arthur Rackham. Original Inscribed Ink Drawing.
New York: Autumn, 1929. A charming drawing of a mouse and a
crow, with a warm inscription by Rackham: "To Alice Pape/in memory
of some/of my pleasantest evenings/in New York". Signed by Rackham
to the right of the inscription. On plain white paper. At
the bottom, the drawing is signed by Eric Pape ("Eric Pape
Studios"). Approximately 6.75 x 4.75 inches. Matted, framed and
glazed. Framed with the actual quill pen used to make the drawing
(visible size of pen is approximately 7 inches). On the back of the
frame, there is a small printed paper label from the Scott &
Fowles gallery, again signed by Eric Pape ("Eric Pape 200 West
57th St.") about an exhibition of Rackham's drawings that they
hosted. Frame size approximately 14.5 x 11.5 inches. Frame worn
with some later tape repairs, rear backing is loose, one scuff mark
to printed paper gallery label on rear. Still, a fine drawing,
unusual with the quill pen, and with an excellent association. Eric
Pape (American artist, 1870-1938) was one of the most prominent
American artists and illustrators of his day, exhibiting at some of
the most prestigious venues in the United States and abroad. In
1898 he founded the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston, which became
one of the largest art schools in the United States. He married
actress Alice Byrne in 1899.
