O[wen]. J. Gillis. To Hell and Back Again Its Discovery, Description and Experiences. Life in Penitentiaries of Texas and Kansas. [Little Rock]: [The Arkansas House Democrat Printing and Lithograph Company], 1906. First edition. 12mo. vii, [1], 9-112, [1] pages. One illustration on the back wrapper. Publisher's original printed wrappers. Exceedingly scarce.

Gillis was born in 1855 and grew up destitute in Texas. At the age of 15 he became a cowboy with a promising future as a stockman. He "lost" $350 dollars of his employer's money while drinking with some friends in Sulphur Springs, Texas. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary - and that's where the story begins. This is a rare work of which no auction records seem to exist.

Condition: Spine and upper right front wrapper with cellophane tape reinforcement; small portion of top corner of front wrapper missing; toning, damp and light foxing to wrappers; contents lightly toned, else very good condition.
