(Boston: Lee and Shepard Publishers, 1881). First edition. Octavo (8" x 5.25"). xii, 274 pp. Illustrated with photographic portraits of Chief Joseph and Howard in the front, along with a map in the front and a folding map in the back. Publisher's green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind, patterned endpapers. Light wear around the edges, feels a bit shaken, hinges just starting and might have had previous minor repairs. Otherwise a very good clean copy. Housed in a marbled paper slipcase with a morocco lettering label stamped in gilt. Bears the bookplate of Lieutenant-General Philip Henry Sheridan (ie. Lieut. Gen. P.H. Sheridan, U.S. Army) on the front pastedown endpaper. Sheridan was a major figure of the Civil War, and was appointed by U.S. Grant as Chief of Calvary, Army of the Potomac. Sheridan was responsible for the Shenandoah Valley and later when Grant became President, and Sherman General of the Army, Sheridan was named Lieutenant General of the Army and based in Chicago. From there, he was instrumental in having Yellowstone named a National Park, and he presided over the events surrounding the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, including having the Army brought in to stop looting and help with reconstruction efforts. Sheridan was the fourth U.S. Military Officer to be promoted to the rank of full General, after Washington, Grant, and Sherman, and was given his fourth star by President Grover Cleveland.
