    Description

An Original Handwritten Manuscript for an
    Unpublished Story by O. Henry

    O. Henry [pseudonym for William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910]. Original Manuscript for an Unpublished Short Story, "A New Candidate for Sympathy." [N.p., n.d., ca. 1900]. Five octavo leaves. Approximately 8.75 x 5.5 inches. On white ruled paper, rectos only. Written in ink, with author's corrections and paragraph marks. Unsigned. Each leaf is mounted onto a blank page of a blank book, custom-built for this manuscript. Book is bound in early twentieth-century half dark blue levant morocco over blue cloth boards, front board and spine lettered in gilt. All leaves are blank, except for a mounted portrait frontispiece of O. Henry, and a manuscript title page in calligraphy: "A/New Candidate/for/Sympathy/O. Henry/Original Manuscript". Calligraphy in red and black. Joints worn, front joint just starting, some marginal sunning to binding. Manuscript leaves a bit toned, each with a vertical crease. Still, a fine and unusual item.
Accompanying this lot is a copy of an original letter by the treasurer of the Doubleday, Page & Co. (dated January 23, 1919), speaking to the authenticity of this manuscript, and four others.
From the Estate of Rod McKuen.
