William Kennedy. Texas: Its Geography, Natural History, and Topography. New York: Benjamin and Young, 1844. 8vo. x, 118 pp. Original printed front wrap mounted to modern replacement wraps. Contents generally clean, A small gnawed area at the upper right edge of the first six pages not affecting text, otherwise in very good condition. Presented in a chemise within a slipcase.

This is an abridged version of Book I, Vol. I of Kennedy's Texas: The Rise, Progress, and Prospects of the Republic of Texas, considered the single best work on early Texas. Raines, in his Bibliography of Texas, writes: "This book was pronounced to be the best history of Texas extant. The Texan Congress passed a resolution of thanks to the author. The physical description of Texas [is] the best published up to that time. No historian of Texas has more eloquent paragraphs." This abridged edition covers the geography and natural features of Texas.

Also contains A. Le Grand's Copy of Field Notes and Journal of Survey. A. Le Grand was in charge of the survey party to map out a land grant for the New Arkansas and Texas Land Company. Unlike the English issue of this book, the American edition does not include the map, but is generally considered rarer and more desirable.
