David Hume. The History of England. Oxford: William Pickering, 1826.

Eight octavo volumes complete. With numerous engraved portraits throughout.

Nineteenth-century full polished olive calf by Hering. Spines heavily stamped in gilt in compartments, gilt red morocco labels, gilt board edges and turn-ins. Marbled endpapers and edges. Occasional light foxing. Very good.

    More Information:

A very handsomely bound edition of Hume's classic history, considered the standard work on English history for some six decades until the publication of Macaulay's History, first published in 1849. Though in the work Hume defends the characters of the Stuart kings and dismisses the reality of the theory of the social contract, the theme of his comprehensive history is civil liberty, and in particular constitutional development in England from the Anglo Saxon period through the Glorious Revolution.
