    Description

Unique Vellum Book From Napoleon's Private Collection Sonetti a Bonaparte (Paris: P. Didot, 1800), first edition, unpaginated, 8vo (5.25" x 8.5"), full red morocco with gilt decoration, silk endpapers, printed on vellum, in marbled slip case, Italian text, in very good condition with light scuffing to boards, second front free endpaper loose. Enclosed is an LS "Cesar Olschki" (famous European bookseller in Geneva, Switzerland) dated 1931 to a Mr. Vories. The letter reads in part: "I am sending you the presentation copy of Buttura's Sonnets to Napoleon, which you wished to have on approval. As it is the unique copy printed on vellum the notice of the old owner of it, which you will find inside, is very likely, and the volume must come from Napoleon's private library."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
