    Nicolas Fontaine. The History of the Old and New Testament. Extracted from the Sacred Scriptures, the Holy Fathers, and Other Ecclesiastical Writers... 53 engraved plates from the New Testament volume only. [London: Samuel Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1680]. First English edition. Krown & Spellman retail: $750. Folio. We believe these plates to be from the 1680 volume of the book (there is no 1682 edition), in accordance with our bibliographic research. All plates appear to be from the New Testament and involve Jesus Christ. With engravings by G. Freman, Peter Paul Bouche, Johannes Kip, Frederick Van den Hove, et al. Collection of 53 full page engravings (from a total of 86) on 27 leaves, all but one double-sided. Later half-morocco over cloth boards with typed label on front board stating: "bible wood cut engravings from 1682 in British Museum". Some rubbing, bumping, soiling and edgewear to extremities with some dampstaining and loss. Front and rear boards detached, but present. Some foxing, toning, creasing and chipping to plates, with some occasional repairs. Fair. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.


    More Information:

    Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709), French Jansenist theologian, translator and poet. He composed the History of the Old and New Testament with the help of his friend Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy while the two were imprisoned in the Bastille. The illustrated English edition is often referred to as Blomes History of the Bible, after Richard Blome, one of the most active publishers of illustrated books in post-Restoration London.
