Early Works from the Picturesque Movement

Uvedale Price. An Essay on the Picturesque, as Compared with the Sublime and Beautiful; and, on the Use of Studying Pictures, for the Purpose of Improving Real Landscape. London: J. Robson, 1794 [and:] Hereford: D. Walker, 1798.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. xv, [1], 288, 20; xxvii, [1], 432 pages.

Uniformly bound in contemporary full speckled calf with morocco spine labels and gilt titles. General rubbing and scuffing with some abrading to corners. Offsetting to endpapers. Bookplates excised from front pastedowns. Mild toning with some occasional minor foxing. Copious notations throughout and to endpapers. A very good set.

An early work in the Picturesque movement, in which Price expresses his view that landscaping should incorporate existing trees and paths, instead of sweeping these away for new planting.
