    Two Prints from Thornton's
    "The Temple of Flora"

Robert John Thornton (1768-1837). "Hyacinths". "London Published June 1, 1801 by Dr. Thornton." [together with:] "The Maggot-bearing Stapelia". "London Published July 1, 1801 by Dr. Thornton." Two hand finished and color-printed mezzotint engraved plates from Robert John Thornton's "The Temple of Flora" (the third and final part of his masterwork New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Linnæus [1799-1810]). "Hyacinths" was engraved by Warner after Sydenham Edwards and measures approximately 19 x 24 inches. It has edge wear with small edge tears and paper chips, discolorations around the borders, light foxing, remnants along upper border (perhaps from a previous mounting), and holograph pencil notes in the lower border. "The Maggot-bearing Stapelia" was engraved by Joseph Constantine Stadler after Peter Charles Henderson and measures approximately 18 x 22.5 inches. It has edge wear with small tears and paper chips, corner bends, light foxing or soiling around the borders, and small holograph pencil number in the lower right corner. Together a pair of very good floral prints from Thornton's classic work.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
