    Description

Robert de Berquen. Les Merveilles des Indes Orientales et Occidentales... Paris: C. Lambin, 1661. First edition, first issue of this rare book on gems and their histories. Octavo. Approximately 8.5 x 6 inches; 216 x 154 mm. [xii], 1-112 pages. With engraved portrait of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans inserted at front. Contemporary quarter brown calf over brown marbled paper-covered boards, spine ruled in gilt, green gilt morocco lettering label. Spine worn and chipped, joints starting, binding worn. Hinges starting, small bookplate with numerical note and previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, rear pastedown with a few ink markings. Title-page has a small oval (about 1 x 2 inches) cut out near the printer's mark, not apparently affecting text. The recto of the portrait (it is bound in with the recto blank and the verso with the image) is somewhat soiled. Sig. 2 *4 A-O4, with C2 marked as B2, F2 marked as F1, K2 and L3 not marked, M3 marked M2. Text a bit toned, with occasional soiling, foxing. The top of page 112 has several ink spots. A good example of this scarce title. JCB(3) III:51-52; Grasse I:348; Alden and Landis 661; Sabin 4957.

More Information: "The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor ones, as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald, amethyst, aquamarine, hyacinth, opal, chrysolite, iris, vermeille, garnets, carnelian, turquoise, quartz varieties, pearl, coral and amber, and lastly, a chapter on gold and silver" (Sinkankas, p. 97f).
