    More Information:

Oppian's poem on fishing was the first book on the subject to be printed (in 1478). It contains most of the ichthyological knowledge of the early Christian era, describes methods for catching fish and the translator Lippi adds recipes for cooking, distichs on animals, fruit, minerals, precious stones, etc. Rare edition by the Jülich humanist Caesarius (1468-1550) of the ancient Latin version of the Greek poem on fishing of Oppian of Anabarzus in Cilicia (161-180), followed by Pliny's book nine, devoted to fishes and their natural history, and book thirty-two, where he provided a list of the names of aquatic animals, which amounts to 174. The final part of this book is a work on fish by Paolo Giovio, humanist bishop of Nocera (1483-1552). Translated from Greek by Lippi. Scarce book.
