John James Audubon. The Birds of America. From Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories. New York: V. G. Audubon, 1856. Second octavo edition. Seven volumes. Octavo (10.5 X 6.75 inches; 266 x 170 mm). Illustrated with 500 colored plates with tissue guards. Bound in publisher's deluxe binding with glassine wrappers on volumes 1-5, with blind stamped title on cover; text block edges gilt. Text blocks of volumes 3 and 6 are separating from binding; plate 79 has stain at base; slight foxing and toning throughout. Good. Though not inexpensive, the octavo edition, of which this is the second, of Audubon's monumental work was a tremendous, perhaps the greatest, commercial success of any color plate book issued in the United States during the 19th century.
