Includes edition E of prospectus at end of the first volume (see Fries p. 389). Five volumes. Octavo (10.5 x 6.5 inches; 267 x 165 mm.). [i-v], vi-xx, [xi], xii-xxiv, [1], 2-512, [1-3, prospectus], 4-15; [i-v], vi-xxviii, [xxix], xxx-xxxii, [1], 2-588; [i-v], vi-xii, [xiii], xiv-xvi, [1], 2-638; [i-v], vi-xxiv, [xxv], xxvi-xxviii, [1], 2-618; [i-v], vi-xxv, [xxvi-xxvii], xxviii-xxxix, [1], 2-664 pages. Published in what appears to be original boards with paper labels on spine; bindings worn with discoloration; several pages in Volume IV are uncut; slight foxing in first and last several pages in each volume; Volume III text block is separating from binding. Good. Audubon published this work to accompany his monumental double elephant folio Birds of America, and thus without the plates he circumvented the British Copyright Act of 1709, which required the deposit of books published in Britain into the holdings of nine separate British libraries. This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
