Mixed octavo edition (first volume is second edition, second is a first edition, and third is an apparent second edition). Royal quarto (10.25 x 6.75 inches; 262 x 172 mm.). viii, 383, [1]; [iv], 334; [2], v, [1], 348, [2] pages. 155 full-color plates based on original drawings from life by Audubon. Majority engraved by W. E. Hitchcock, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia. Some early plates in the first volume engraved by R. Trembly, printed by Nagel & Weingærtner. Majority with tissue inserts. Plate CXIX misnumbered CIX. Contemporary straight-grain morocco rebacked to style in calf; boards bordered in blind; gilt fillet decorations; spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands edged in blind. All edges trimmed and marbled. Marbled endpapers. Morocco generally worn at edges with some loss to fillet decorations, corners bumped; overall mild surface scratches, rubbing to boards. Endpapers split at hinges, though sound; browning at edges from exposure to leather. Very minor toning, slight offsetting and occasional faint spotting throughout text block. About near fine interior, clean and bright, in an about very good binding. With bookplate of Walter Faxon affixed to front pastedowns. First bookplate dated in inked manuscript text: "E. F. Jan. 26, 1865." First bookplate also reads at bottom, in a different hand: "From the Library of Edwin Faxon. / 1898." Sabin 2367-2368.
