    Seventy-three Hand-colored
    Plates of Australian Birds

John Gould. A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands. London: Published by the Author, 1837-38. Quarto. Four parts in one volume. Seventy-three hand-colored lithographic plates by Elizabeth Gould, each with a leaf of descriptive letterpress. Eight page "Description of New Species of Australian Birds" at rear. Morocco backstrip with five raised bands, gilt titles and decorations in compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, in want of original boards, with slightly oversized boards supplied with binder's tape at joints. Image offset from plates on facing text pages. "Strix Delicatulus" plate and facing page with minor paper loss in the upper margins, not affecting text or image. Light foxing and dust shadows in the margins, occasional minor soiling. A very good candidate for rebinding.

    More Information:

"Gould started publishing a Synopsis of the Birds or Australia in 1837. Four parts were issued with seventy-three lithographs showing the heads of the one hundred and sixty-eight differet species. In a few cases, the outlines of the whole bird, a wing, or the feet were drawn in pencil. At this time the birds of the great Continent of Australia were still almost unknown." - (Jackson, 45).
