    An Excellent Work on Mastodons

John C. Warren. The Mastodon Giganteus of North America. Boston: John Wilson and Son, 1852.

First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front blank: "Dr. Henry Perkins / from / The Author". Quarto (approximately 13 x 9.5 inches). viii, [220] pages. With twenty-six lithographed plates (including frontispiece - the remaining plates inserted at rear), large fold-out lithograph plate of a Mastodon inserted at rear, and engraved title-page with hand-colored vignette inserted at front.

Modern library binding of light blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Cloth from front board of original binding laid down. Some rubbing, soiling to original cloth. Text a bit toned and foxed, large folding plate with a few short tears. Still, very good.

Housed in a folding enclosure mounted on rear pastedown is the following pamphlet: Jeffries Wyman. Description of a Portion of the Lower Jaw and a Tooth of the Mastodon Andium; also, of a Tooth and Fragment of the Femur of a Mastodon from Chile. [N.p., n.d.]. Quarto [10] pages. With two lithograph plates inserted at rear. In original wraps. Also included is an autograph note signed by a George T. Carter, enclosing an early cabinet photograph (2.5 x 4 inches) of a Mastodon jaw, found forty feet beneath a city street. Overall, a wonderful collection for the paleontologist.

    Nissen Zoology 4336.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
