    James Cowles Prichard. The Natural History of Man; Comprising Inquiries into the Modifying Influence of Physical and Moral Agencies on the Different Tribes of the Human Family. London: H. Bailliere, 1843.

    First edition. Octavo. Thirty-three hand-coloured and five plain illustrations engraved on steel and numerous engravings on wood. Bookplate with unicorn crest of "William Ramsay/ University of Glasgow" engraved by J. Scott, on front pastedown. Very good. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

    xvi, 556 pages. According to the title-page there should be thirty-six colored and four plain steel engravings; however all plates from the plate list on page [ix] are present. Bound in half-calf over cloth covered boards, five raised spine bands, with rules, title and unicorn device all in gilt on spine, marbled endpapers and matching text block edges. Bookplate with unicorn crest of "William Ramsay/ University of Glasgow" engraved by J. Scott, on front pastedown. Binding rubbed, scuffed, and soiled; small bookbinder's label on front pastedown and small bookseller's label on rear pastedown, price sticker on front pastedown with small paper lifts, bookseller's holograph pencil numbers on free endpapers, fly-leaves, and index page [x], small hole in margin of page 331 not affecting text, plain plates with soiling or browning around the borders; else in very good condition.
