George Ferson Durant. Algae and Corallines, of the Bay & Harbor of New York. Illustrated With Natural Types. New York: George P. Putnam, 1850. First edition. Apparently limited to 50 copies. Quarto (13.5 x 10 inches, 343 x 254 mm.). [1-7], 8-43, [1,blank], 41 leaves with 175 mounted specimens with a few additional specimens laid in separately, [2, press reviews] pages. Original red pebbled-grain morocco titled and lavishing decorated in gilt; all edges gilt. Light to moderate shelf wear along the edges of the boards and spine. The hinges are cracked but the boards remain firmly attached. Some mold to the French silk endpapers. A very good copy. Rare. According to a 1907 article by Elizabeth Howe in The Lamp, Durant had planned 50 copies of his unique work to be produced but she states "the total number completed could hardly have exceeded fifteen." In any case, only four copies are recorded in OCLC and only a couple have come up at auction in the last hundred years.
