    Description

George Edwards. A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and of Some Other Rare and Undescribed Animals. London: Printed for the Author at the College of Physicians, 1743-1751. [Bound with:] Gleanings of Natural History. London: Printed for the Author at the College of Physicians, 1758-1764. First edition. Seven volumes (Natural History, volumes 1-4; Gleanings, volumes 5-7). Folio (11.25 x 9 inches; 286 x 229 mm.). Full pagination available online.

One hand colored copper etched emblematic frontispiece in Volume 1; 362 hand colored copper etched plates throughout, 4 uncolored copper engravings (3 folding, these 4 in first volume), plus 1 uncolored copper plate "Samojeed" (opposite p. 118 in second volume). Volumes bound in full red leather, boards decorated with gilt borders with corner ornaments of pineapples, spine divided into seven compartments with six raised bands; all text block edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Some wear to bindings; offsetting to plates, but coloring strong and vibrant; negligible foxing and spotting. Bookplate of unidentified previous owner. Very good. This is a handsome, complete set of one of the most important ornithology and natural history books published in the 18th century. Edwards (1694-1773) was appointed librarian of the Royal College of Physicians with the aid of Sir Hans Sloan. Soon after Edwards assumed his duties, he commenced a series of colored drawings of animals and birds, which were later used in these works. Edwards's drawings led to his award of the Gold Medal of the Royal Society, to which he was later elected as a Fellow. Nissen IVB 286-289.
