Charles Darwin. The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. London: John Murray, 1871. First edition, second state of the title-page in the first volume (first obtainable, with only two known copies dated 1870). Two volumes; octavo (7.5 x 4.75 inches; 190 x 124 mm.). viii, [1]-423, [1, colophon], [16, ads]; viii, [1]-475, [1, colophon], [16, ads, dated January, 1871] pages. With Postscript leaf inserted after page viii in Volume II, as called-for. Illustrated throughout with numerous engravings and diagrams. Publisher's green cloth, boards decoratively paneled in blind; spines stamped in gilt; black coated endpapers. Both spines somewhat skewed; backstrips a bit toned; edges somewhat worn with light chipping to the crowns; boards lightly soiled; corners bumped; boards of the first volume slightly splayed. Hinges cracking; some foxing to binder's blanks and ads; minor occasional foxing or thumbsoiling in text; a few gutters starting in both volumes; upper corners of pages 287 and 383 in Volume II have small chips; previous owner's signature on front blank of volume I, a few leaves mildly creased. With an amusing pencil sketch of a man in profile on the recto of the rear free endpaper in volume I. Still, a very good set. Includes the first mention of the word "evolution" in any of Darwin's writings. Freeman 937.
