Charles Darwin. Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of the H. M. S. Beagle... New-York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1846. First U. S. edition (volumes X and XI of Harper's New Miscellany). Two volumes; small octavo (7 x 4.25 inches; 175 x 108 mm.). Publisher's brown cloth, boards decoratively ruled in blind, front boards with gilt central "passing the torch" motif, rear boards with this motif in blind, spines lettered in gilt. Volume II has its tailcap strengthened, rear joint repaired, new endleaves. Spines lightly sunned, some edgewear to bindings, corners bumped, some light rubbing to boards, bookplates and markings for the Middlebury College Library on the endleaves of both books, as well as evidence of sticker removal, text foxed, a few gutters cracking, a few leaves roughly opened. Still, a very good copy. Darwin's first major publication. Freeman 16.
