Alexander Wilson. American Ornithology; or the Natural History of the Birds of the United States. Illustrated with Plates Engraved and Coloured from Original Drawings taken from Nature. New York: Collins & Company; Philadelphia: Harrison Hall, 1828-1829. Appears to be an unrecorded large paper issue of text of second edition. Four volumes (three volumes of text and one atlas). Text volumes in quarto (10.5 x 8.25 inches; 267 x 210 mm.). Atlas in folio (15.25 x 11.75 inches; 387 x 298 mm.). [i-iii], iv, [v], vi, [vii], viii, [ix], x-cxcix, [1], 2-231; [i-iii], iv-vi, [9], 10-456; [i-iii], iv-vi, [1], 2-396 pages. Atlas with 76 hand colored engraved plates, approximately two-thirds with tissue guards. Bound in half red leather with marbled boards. Boards worn and rubbed; plates moderately foxed. Good. This apparently is a scarce unrecorded large paper edition of Wilson's monumental work of birds of the United States, which was first published in nine volumes between 1808 and 1814. Wilson's American Ornithology is considered the most important American ornithological work issued before Audubon's masterpiece. The edition presented here was prepared by George Ord, Wilson's friend and associate, who rearranged the work and added a biographical sketch of Wilson, who died in 1813. Although bibliographical sources make no mention of a "large paper" issue of this edition, this copy is set on larger paper than the octavo versions of this edition. Nissen IVB 992.
