[Pliny the Elder]. The Historie of the World. Commonly called, The Natural History of C. Plinius Secundus. Translated into English by Philemon Holland, Doctor of Physicke. London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1634. Second edition of first English translation. Two volumes in one. Folio (12.75 x 8.5 inches; 325 x 215 mm.). [58], 614, [42], [12], 632, [86] pages. Title vignette ornament, decorative initials, head- and tail-pieces. Later half calf over marbled paper-covered boards; calf ruled in gilt; spine with five raised bands and red morocco label stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges trimmed and stained blue. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; corners slightly bumped; a few tiny abrasions to calf; faint creasing at joints. Staining somewhat worn at edges of text block, starting to fade, with some ink splashes to fore-edge. Title-page frayed at fore-edge with several repairs at inner margin (appears to have been reattached to a stub); two inked signatures at head. Regular age toning to pages; very occasional scattered spots of marginal foxing and staining throughout. Very good. ESTC S121936.
