    The Magnificent and Stately Double-Elephant Folio Facsimile Reproduction of Audubon's Birds of America

    [John James Audubon]. Birds of America. New York and Amsterdam: Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum orbis terrarum, 1971-1972. One of only two full-sized facsimile reprint editions ever published of Audubon's Birds of America, this title is issued as one of 250 numbered copies, this being copy number 217. Complete in four double elephant folio volumes. Approximately 39.5 x 25.75 inches. With 435 color lithographed plates. Bound in contemporary half brown calf over blue cloth boards, boards ruled in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, brown gilt calf lettering labels on front covers. Minor rubbing, very light soiling to bindings. A fine set of this magnificent production. From the estate of Scott and Stuart Gentling.

    This massive edition is taken from the subscriber's copy in the Teyler Foundation in Haarlem, the Netherlands. It was printed on custom-made paper, employing eight color offset photography. From the estate of wildlife painter and publisher Scott Gentling (1942-2011) who, with his twin brother Stuart, published an oversized portfolio Of Birds and Texas (Gentling Editions, 1986), which was dedicated to Audubon. Scott Gentling also painted the official gubernatorial portrait of George W. Bush in 2002.
