[George Riley]. The Beauties of the Creation; or, A New Moral System of Natural History... Philadelphia: William Young, 1796. Small octavo. 346, [2] pp. Contemporary boards, front and rear covers detached. Bookplate on verso Rubbing on covers and extremities. Lightly tanned with scattered foxing on edges and sheets. Ink ownership signature, "C. Rosenberg/ 8/69" on front free endpaper. Very good contents.

More Information: First published in London in 1790, the first American edition issued from Philadelphia in 1792. The author says that 'natural history' comprehends "the whole produce of the creation," reflecting the greatness of God. "To avoid that tedious detail of description which tires by its sameness and confuses by its intracacy, we have specified only those characteristics that were essential to notice, in order to be able to distinguish one animal from another: but, in this, the peculiar beauties are more particularly noticed than any deviation of colour or form." The Index of Animals goes from antelope and armadillo to zebra. Similar indeces are provided for insects, trees, and flowers. Evans 31105. Not in Jenkins.
