    Beautifully Hand-Colored Floral Plates

    [Diverse hands]. The Florist's Journal. London: How and Parsons [and] A. Adlard [and] R. Groombridge and Sons, 1840-1848. Nine octavo volumes. One hundred and eighteen hand-colored floral plates, seven engraved title pages, some in-text illustrations. Uniformly bound in half leather over marbled paper covered boards, all edges marbled to match; four raised bands with gilt floral devices, decorations and title labels in compartments.
    Bindings rubbed and lightly soiled, corner and edge bumps, leather labels with chips and tears; first four volumes have spine labels which have come off and are loosely laid in the front covers; volume two with surface paper loss on rear cover; engraved title page on volume four is browned and dampstained; each volume with holograph pencil notes on verso of front free endpaper and facing page, few other holograph pencil names or marks, small bookseller's label on front pastedown, some image off-set on text pages facing plates, tissue guards only in volumes eight and nine, plates with light toning in borders, few small page tears and indentations, foxing, occasional minor smudges or soiling, else in very good condition.

    More Information:

    First two volumes were published by How and Parsons in 1840 and 1841. Volumes three and four were published by A. Adlard in 1842 and 1843 with an additional engraved title page "The Florist's Journal, or Monthly Record of the Best Flowers;" subsequently retitled "The Florist's Journal and Gardener's Record" in volumes five and six (1844 and 1845). The remaining volumes were published by R. Groombridge and Sons, being volumes seven and eight (1846 and 1847) with hand-colored engraved title pages only, and volume nine (1848) with both hand-colored engraved title page and printed title page.
