Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin (1727-1817) was a talented botanist and professor in Vienna. In 1754, Emperor Francis I asked him to accompany an expedition to the West Indies (Martinique and Jamaica) to study the native flora, and to collect samples of flora and fauna (the animals meant to go to the royal menagerie). This book is the result of that expedition.
