London: Printed for the Author, by J. Davis [and:] R. Taylor and Co., 1790-1814. First editions. Complete in thirty-six volumes (without the later five supplemental volumes). Octavo (9 x 5.25 inches; 227x 137 mm.). Various paginations. With all 2,592 hand-colored plates of British plants. Contemporary spotted calf, spines ruled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, black gilt morocco numbering labels, five raised bands, gilt board edges. Three volumes (volumes XVI-XVIII) supplied from another set in quarter diced Russia over marbled boards, green morocco gilt lettering labels (boards repaired and reinforced in leather). Some wear to bindings, a few hinges starting, some volume lacking the numbering labels, some toning, occasional foxing on text and plates, ink notations on the front free endpaper of volume I. Bookplates of Henry John Wollaston on the pastedowns of volumes XVI-XVIII. Very good, with interiors generally clean. "Sowerby studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools, and, after a brief association with the marine painter Richard Wright, turned to botanical illustration. His best work is to be found in English Botany (1790-1814) which he produced in conjunction with Sir Hames Smith." (Sitwell, Great Flower Books, p. 240). Henrey 1366; Hunt 717.
