First editions of the first nine volumes (out of an eventual twenty). Octavo (8.25 x 6.25 inches; 209 x 158 mm.). Various paginations. Engraved title-pages. With 901 (out of 900 called-for; plate number 684 has a duplicate) hand-colored engraved plates by George Cooke. Near contemporary brown calf, boards double-ruled in gilt and decoratively paneled in blind, with gilt floral cornerpieces. All volumes rebacked in modern brown calf, gilt. Boards rubbed and somewhat edgeworn, a few volumes with insect damage to boards, some moderate soiling, hinges reinforced. Text and plates generally clean with occasional foxing or thumbsoiling.
