    Description

Nathaniel Hawthorne. Twice-Told Tales. Boston: James Munroe and Company, 1842. First expanded edition, following the 1837 American Stationers publication. Two octavo volumes. [2, blank], iv, 331, [3, blank]; [2, blank], iv, 356, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's dark brown cloth (BAL's A binding), spines lettered and elaborately stamped in gilt, boards decoratively stamped in blind, page edges rough trimmed, cream-coated white endpapers. Spine ends repaired, somewhat extensively at crown of second volume; front joints starting, some spine gilt lightly tarnished, board edges rubbed. Book store rubber stamp to front pastedowns and contemporary ownership signature to preliminary blanks in each volume. A very good, sophisticated set. Much less common than the 1837 edition, with just two auction records, both Sotheby's, since 1995. BAL 7954. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
