William Godwin. Things As They Are; or, the Adventures of Caleb Williams. London: G. G. and J. Robinson, 1796. Second edition, corrected. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Three twelvemo volumes. Half-titles present. Bound in contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, red and black morocco gilt lettering label. All volumes rebacked and recornered to style in modern calf, original labels preserved. Some occasional foxing, thumbsoiling in text. Each volume with previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Still, very good.

"Godwin's best-known book, is generally regarded as the first novel of crime and detection. Because of his political beliefs, however, the viewpoint is the reverse of that of virtually all subsequent detective fiction. In the genre as we know it, the law is regarded as good; in Caleb Williams, it is totally evil, demonstrating the injustice of any system in which all men are not equal... (Encyclopedia of Crime and Detection, p. 272).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
