Octavo (7.5 x 4.75 inches; 192 x 122 mm.). viii, 316; [ii], 360; [ii], 368 pages with sixteen-page publisher's catalog, dated November 1, 1860, inserted at rear of Volume III. Early twentieth-century dark violet three-quarter morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine in five compartments with four raised bands, two compartments lettered in gilt, others with elaborate gilt-stamped design with accents stamped in black and brown morocco onlay floral device, boards ruled in gilt; top edge stained violet and sprinkled in white, other edges rough-trimmed. Marbled endpapers, flyleaves, original cloth and five of the original free endpapers bound in (lacking the rear free endpaper of the third volume). Binding by Manuel Gérard, stamp-signed on the verso of the front endpapers. Joints lightly stressed; light wear to spine ends and corners; crown of Volume III flaking. Occasional light soiling or staining throughout text. Ex-George Staehle with his gilt-lettered morocco label on the front pastedown of Volume I, previous owner signature on original front free endpaper. A beautifully bound set in near fine condition. One of the earliest and most important mystery novels. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. The Dark Page 70. From the KoKo Collection.
